On June 20 at approx. 0430, Phoenix Police Special Assignment Unit (SAU) was called out to
a Circle K at 67th & McDowell in reference to a male, slight build, mid 30-s, 140 lbs. (There
was a report of gunfire being shot in the air, also.) Upon arrival the information relayed was the
hostage was possibly a girlfriend due to the fact that on several occasion she chose not leave
when the opportunity presented itself. Police were also told that the suspect had pointed
the .380 semi-automatic gun at both himself and the female on a couple occasions.
At 0500 a scout team consisting of two officers was sent out to relay information from the
scene. By 0515 SAU was taking over the inner perimeter. Three snipers were deployed with
varying shots from 25 to 45 yards. Two arrest teams were also assembled and deployed. One
of the teams was placed behind the Circle K, only 10 yards from the suspect, but out of sight.
The second team was set up 25 yards away, in view of the subject, but behind a police car.
As SAU was continuing to set, the subject requested water. A bottle of water was thrown to the
suspect, but out of his reach by 30 feet. After a short time he set his gun down and walked
towards the water. The arrest teams moved in and a SAU officer deployed the ADVANCED
TASER. The shirtless suspect immediately fell to the ground and was taken into custody
without injury to officers or the suspect.
Subject was immediately incapacitated during the 5 second cycle of the M26. During the
arrest, he began to resist and underwent another 5 second cycle. The ADVANCED TASER
was deployed from a distance of approximately 10 feet. Upon contact the darts had a
separation of 24 inches, one made contact in the upper back, and the second one made
contact in the lower back waist area.
The darts were removed by a SAU officer leaving only a small red mark where they entered

the skin. While at Maryvale Precinct the suspect was interviewed about the effects of the
ADVANCED TASER. The suspect advised that he felt a great amount of pain in his lower
back, as well as a paralyzing feeling in his legs while the M26 was on. He advised that when
the M26 was turned off he felt normal, but was a little light headed. Lt. Markley noted that this
was a situation where the M26 saved the suspect's life as he pointed his gun several times at
his girlfriend Note: The officers were certified to use the TASERs, two to three weeks ago by
