Former NYPD Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik Joins
TASER® International, Inc's Board of Directors
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., June 3, 2002 –TASER® International, Inc. (Nasdaq: TASR, TASRW), a provider
of advanced less-lethal weapons for use in the law enforcement, private security and personal defense
markets, today announced with great pleasure the appointment of former NYPD Police Commissioner
Bernard Kerik to the Board of Directors of TASER International, Inc.
“We are delighted to have such an outstanding and world-renowned law enforcement professional join
our ranks," said Phillips Smith, Chairman of the Board, TASER International, Inc. "Mr. Kerik brings a
wealth of knowledge and experience to the Company and will be highly effective in helping to further
position TASER International, Inc. for the significant growth opportunities in the worldwide law
enforcement market,” said Smith.
The TASER Board of Directors currently includes Phillips Smith, chairman; Tom Smith, TASER
president and co-founder; Rick Smith, Taser CEO and co-founder; Bruce Culver; and Matt McBrady. The
board's mission is to help further penetrate the law enforcement market both domestically and
internationally and provide strategic planning for the future of the company.
“I am proud to join such an innovative, high-growth company that has such an exciting future,
particularly within the global law enforcement community where I have spent my professional life,” said
Bernard Kerik. “I look forward to working with the team that built TASER International into the
company it is today, and to contribute to the great cause in getting less-lethal weapons into the hands of
every law enforcement officer in our country and abroad.”
The company believes that there is no better description of Mr. Kerik and some of his major personal and
professional accomplishments than the press release issued by the New York Police Department (NYPD)
when Mr. Kerik was sworn in as Police Commissioner by former New York City Mayor Giuliani.
During the swearing-in ceremony in August, 2000, Mayor Giuliani stated, “Today, it gives me great
pleasure to swear in as Police Commissioner a man of proven ability, talent, and judgment. Bernard Kerik
was critical to the Department of Correction's great success over the past six-and-a-half years. He led that
Department to higher and higher levels of achievement with his talent and managerial skill. And now he
will do the same for the NYPD, the largest and greatest police department in the United States. I have no
doubt that Bernie will rise to the challenge, because he has risen to challenges throughout his career…
Bernie understands what leadership is all about. He knows how to inspire others to the highest level of
performance, and expects others to rise to the same level.”
Bernard B. Kerik was appointed the 40th Police Commissioner of the City of New York by Mayor
Rudolph W. Giuliani on August 21, 2000. As the leader of the largest municipal police department in the
United States, Commissioner Kerik oversaw a uniformed force of more than 41,000 officers, a civilian
force of more than 14,500 which includes the 3,500 member School Safety Division and 2,000 member
Traffic Control Division, and an annual budget of more than $3.2 billion.
