LA Settles With Wrongly Convicted Man 1 of 1 http://news.findlaw.com Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006 LA Settles With Wrongly Convicted Man (AP) - LOS ANGELES-A man who served more than a decade behind bars for three murders he didn't commit will get $720,000 to settle his damage claim against the city. The City Council on Wednesday approved the agreement with David Allen Jones, who was imprisoned for 11 years before being released in 2004 when DNA evidence cleared him of the slayings. Jones' attorney called the deal fair but declined to discuss its details. "It was a long time coming," lawyer Glen E. Tucker said. Jones was convicted in 1995 of killing Tammie Christmas, Mary Edwards and Debra Williams and raping a fourth woman. Police sought out Jones for questioning because he lived near where the victims' bodies were found in South Los Angeles over three months in 1992. He had also been charged with trying to rape a prostitute nearby. Jones, described as having the mental capacity of an 8-year-old, always maintained his innocence but gave conflicting statements about his actions. Authorities later charged Chester D. Turner with killing two of the women. Turner pleaded not guilty. 2006-10-05T17:34:08Z Copyright 2006 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
